15 Jun 2023

TeleGeography, a company that provides telecom market research and consulting, has published a report on the deployment of 5G networks in Africa. The report reveals that there is a surge in the deployment of 5G networks on the continent, with 18 countries in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) now offering commercial 5G services. South Africa leads the way in 5G deployment in Africa, according to the report, with an estimated five million subscriptions recorded by the end of 2022. Rain, a data-only network provider in South Africa, became the first telecom company to commercially deploy 5G on the continent in September 2019. Other major players in the South African 5G market include Vodacom and MTN, which launched their commercial 5G networks in 2020. In addition to South Africa, other African countries that have launched 5G services include Botswana, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Zambia.

The report also highlights Saudi Arabia as the leader in the MEA market, with over 11.2 million users at the end of 2022, representing over a quarter of the mobile sector. The report suggests that the adoption of 5G networks in Africa has a promising outlook, with many countries in the region embracing the technology. The report includes a table from Techloy that illustrates the current state of the 5G race in Africa.
