Amazon confirms layoffs affecting 9,000 people across AWS, Twitch, and other divisions.

28 Apr 2023

Amazon has announced another massive layoff, saying it will lose another 9,000 jobs. A memo by CEO Andy Jassy revealed the layoffs would impact those in its AWS (Amazon Web Services) cloud unit, Twitch gaming division, People Experience and Technology (PXT), and advertising.
The latest layoffs follow the announcement of 18,000 layoffs earlier this year as part of the company’s massive cost-cutting bid. The layoff announcement sheds light on Amazon's gradual efforts to reduce headcount.
CEO Andy Jassy stated that there’s no complete scope of their cutbacks in terms of determining which specific roles will be eliminated.

The company's latest earnings report, released earlier last month, showed growth in its cloud division slipping to 20% from more than 39% a year ago.

Like many other big tech companies, Amazon ramped up staff early in the pandemic. Amazon's latest layoffs come amid a string of job cuts in the tech industry over the past few months.

In a separate memo he sent to Twitch employees, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy confirmed that the Amazon-owned live streaming platform would lay off about 400 employees. "We have made the very difficult decision to reduce our workforce to sustainably operate our business."

With the recent news of layoffs, Amazon has officially admitted that it is scaling back what has been one of its biggest revenue streams in recent times.

The latest layoff announcement by Amazon makes it the second of the "Big 5" tech companies to announce two separate rounds of layoffs after Facebook's parent company, Meta, recently announced 10,000 job cuts on top of the 11,000 job cuts late last year.
