Global internet exchange operator AMS-IX and Equinix subsidiary MDX have launched a new internet exchange in Lagos, Nigeria.
The new Internet exchange, AMS-IX Lagos, is located in the carrier-neutral data center of MDXi, an Equinix company. Under the partnership terms, MDXi will serve as AMS-IX commercial partner and as AMS-IX Lagos regional sales and marketing arm. AMS-IX will oversee the technical and operational management of the exchange.
AMS-IX CEO Peter van Burgel said the launch is a very exciting project and an important stepping stone for bringing low-latency affordable Internet available for the West-African region.
AMS-IX Lagos aims to be a key content center for West Africa, allowing regional and local ISPs, carriers, and Internet Exchanges to collect content from large worldwide Content Delivery Networks, hosting firms, and application providers. MDXi, an Equinix Company, and AMS-IX will focus on forming alliances with local telecom carriers in the next months.
In the coming month, AMS-IX Lagos will start with over 25 linked networks after AMS-IX and MDXi, an Equinix Company, migrate and onboard the existing connected networks of West Africa Internet Exchange (WAF-IX). Large CDNs and application providers such as Cloudflare, Microsoft, and Google are among the networks connected to WAF-IX.
Director MDXi, an Equinix subsidiary, Funke Opeke said "This partnership would enable MDXi to deliver value to the rich ecosystem of network operators, carriers, content providers, cloud services providers, and enterprises that we have present in the data center". The collaboration with AMS IX would enable MDXi to strengthen its position as a content hub not only for Nigeria, but also for Francophone and English-speaking West and Central Africa.
