China's Baidu introduces Ernie Bot, AI chatbot to rival ChatGPT.

15 Jun 2023

Baidu, the leading internet search provider in China, has unveiled its own chatbot, ERNIE Bot, to compete with Open AI's ChatGPT, according to a Bloomberg report. ERNIE Bot's launch reportedly caused a 10%-14% drop in Baidu's shares after a series of analysts praised the AI-powered chatbot. Baidu's founder, Robin Li, said the new version of ERNIE Bot has capabilities that are very close to those of GPT-4.

Testers who've tried ERNIE Bot noted that it might be one of the most significant AI bots, especially for search engines. Major tech companies, such as Google and Microsoft, have joined the AI race, developing their own bots, such as Bard, with plans to integrate them into their tools to improve productivity and efficiency. The competition for the best AI chatbot has intensified since the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT, which became the most downloaded app within the first three months of its release.

Bloomberg reports that 650 companies have already signed up to use ERNIE Bot's technology. However, CEO Li acknowledged that ERNIE Bot is not yet ready for public release and that it has been closely scrutinized to compare it with ChatGPT.
