On April 3, 2025, the Lagos State Science and Innovation Council (LASRIC), with the StartUp Lagos team visited the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH). Led by the dedicated Mr. Lateef Alani, this visit aimed to engage with LASRIC grant recipients, assess their innovative projects, and elevate LASRIC's profile on a global stage.
Upon our arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Dr. Adekemi Dahunsi, the Acting Director of Research, Innovation, and Development at LASUSTECH. Her enthusiasm for the partnership set a positive tone for the day's events. Following this, we had the privilege of a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olumuyiwa Odusanya, who was represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Abiodun Denloye. During this encounter, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized LASRIC's vital role in spurring research and innovation within the institution. He expressed gratitude for the ongoing support and encouraged continued funding to catalyze even more impactful projects within the university.
Spotlight on Innovation: Showcasing Grant Recipients
One of the highlights of the visit was the opportunity to meet several inspiring grant awardees who are making substantial contributions to their fields:
• Dr. Tolulope Ibukun Ojo presented her groundbreaking research on creating nutritious Esuru yam-based gari. She passionately advocated for increased funding to expand production capabilities, which could enhance food security and nutrition in the region.
• Engr. Kayode Rafiu Olalere showcased his innovative sustainable building project, focusing on transforming plastic waste into interlocking tiles. This initiative not only addresses pressing environmental challenges but also demonstrates how engineering solutions can promote sustainability in construction.
• Dr. Oladotun Olakanmi Oguntoyinbo astounded us with his creative venture into food technology. He has developed nutritious cookies made from plantain peels, effectively turning food waste into delicious snacks and highlighting the importance of waste valorization in the food industry.
An Insightful Tour of Engineering Excellence
Our day was further enriched by an exclusive tour of the College of Engineering and Technology, where we had the opportunity to observe cutting-edge equipment directly related to Engr. Olalere's research. The facilities showcased the university's commitment to advancing engineering education and research, making it clear that LASUSTECH is at the forefront of technological innovation in Nigeria.
A Collaborative Commitment to Innovation
This visit underscored the importance of collaboration between LASRIC and LASUSTECH. It reaffirmed our shared commitment to fostering research and innovation that address real-world challenges and contribute to the sustainable development of our communities. The projects presented by the grant recipients are a testament to the creativity and determination of the next generation of innovators, and it is crucial that we support their efforts to make a tangible difference.
Let's continue to push the boundaries of research and collaboration together, paving the way for a brighter, more innovative future!
