Ex-Assistant Awaits Life Sentence for Brutal Murder of Tech Entrepreneur

16 Jul 2024

Tyrese Haspil, former assistant to tech entrepreneur Fahim Saleh, is awaiting sentencing after being convicted of Saleh’s brutal murder on July 13, 2020. Saleh, the founder of the Nigerian motorbike ride-sharing company Gokada, was killed in his Manhattan apartment, where Haspil subdued and dismembered him.

Haspil, 25, who had been embezzling funds from Saleh, feared exposure and meticulously planned the murder. He was arrested four days later. On June 24, 2024, a New York State Supreme Court jury found him guilty of first-degree murder and other charges. He faces life imprisonment without parole, with sentencing scheduled for September 10, 2024.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg called the act senseless, while Haspil’s lawyer, Sam Roberts, urged the court to consider mitigating factors. The tech community mourns Saleh, remembering his contributions and innovative spirit.
