Ghana X Team Resolves Severance Dispute After Months of Advocacy.

16 Jun 2024

Following an extended period of negotiations, the former Ghana-based Africa team of X (formerly Twitter) has reached a settlement with the company regarding their severance packages. This resolution comes after over a year of advocacy and legal pressure from the affected employees.

As you may recall, in November 2022, the entire X team responsible for African content moderation in Ghana was laid off as part of a wider restructuring following Elon Musk's acquisition of the platform. The lack of severance at the time generated significant controversy and media attention.

Since then, the former employees, supported by legal representatives, have been discussing with X to reach a fair resolution. This culminated in a settlement agreement finalized on February 20, 2024. While the specific details of the settlement remain confidential, both parties have expressed satisfaction with the outcome.

"We are very pleased to finally be able to put this behind us and look to the future," said a representative of the former employees.

X's future involvement in Africa remains to be determined, particularly given recent challenges with misinformation on the platform - a specific area the disbanded team once addressed. However, the resolution of this dispute marks a positive step forward for the individuals involved, allowing them to move on after a difficult period.
