Kenyan Health-Tech Leader Ilara Health Secures $4.2 Million to Expand Primary Care Network.

15 Jun 2024

Kenyan health-tech company Ilara Health announced today the closure of a $4.2 million pre-Series A funding round, bringing their total investment to date to $11.7 million. The fresh capital will fuel their expansion of an innovative primary care model across Kenya, with the potential for further geographic reach.

Founded in 2019, Ilara Health addresses the limited access to affordable and quality healthcare in peri-urban areas of Kenya. Initially tackling the gap in diagnostics, they provided clinics with income-generating equipment, flexible financing, and necessary training. Since then, they've expanded to digitize clinic operations, offering a one-stop shop for diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, consumables, and electronic patient management systems.

The pre-Series A round was led by DOB Equity, with follow-on investments from AAIC Investment, Angaza Capital, Black Pearl Investments, Perivoli Innovations, Alph Mundi, and Kiva Capital. New investors include the Philips Foundation and Boehringer Ingelheim, bringing valuable healthcare expertise to the table.

"We are thrilled to be joined by prominent global investors who share our vision for Kenya and Africa," said Ilara Health CEO and co-founder Emilian Popa. "This funding will propel our growth and enable us to deliver standardized, quality healthcare across the continent."

Ilara Health currently partners with over 3,000 clinics, serving over 5 million patients annually across 42 Kenyan counties. The new funds will be used to expand their network to 50 branded clinics by the end of the year, strengthening their revenue model and achieving profitability.

A key focus will be on their proprietary Practice Management Software (PMS), which collects live data to analyze clinic performance. This data will be used to provide targeted support, including asset lending, working capital, clinic upgrades, staff training, and diagnostic equipment.

With over 17,000 primary care facilities in Kenya alone, Ilara Health's scalable model has the potential to significantly improve healthcare access and quality for millions of people. Their innovative approach and strategic partnerships position them for continued success in revolutionizing primary care across Africa.
