Lagos to Introduce Electric Buses in Partnership with Oando Plc.

29 Apr 2024

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced plans to introduce the first set of electric buses into the Lagos Mass Transit Master Plan, in partnership with Oando Plc. The new electric buses are set to revolutionize the city's public transportation system, with the ability to travel up to 280km at full charge.

The move is aimed at reducing carbon emissions and increasing efficiency, ultimately making transportation more cost-effective for Lagosians. In a tweet on Sunday, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed his gratitude for the partnership with Oando Plc, stating that a pilot scheme would be launched in the coming months to analyze the operational efficiencies of the new buses in comparison to the current BRT buses.

The Governor also confirmed that the electric buses' range would be sufficient to cover an average daily usage of 200km by existing BRTs, ensuring that the buses will not stop mid-transit. Lagos State is partnering with Oando Clean Energy Limited to install Universal Chargers at public places such as malls and gas stations to power the electric buses.

In addition to the introduction of electric buses, Lagos State is planning to establish an Assembly Plant for Electric Buses in the near future, as part of the government's efforts to transform Lagos into a smarter city. This initiative is part of future plans to increase the fleet of electric vehicles in the city.

The introduction of electric buses is expected to be a game-changer for the city's public transportation system, aligning with the state's goal to provide affordable and efficient transportation for Lagosians.
