Microsoft Kenya has reportedly laid off several employees at its African Development Center in Nairobi, but it's still unclear how many employees were affected.
Microsoft announced earlier in the year that it would lay off 10,000 employees as it aligns its cost structure with revenue and customer demand. Job cuts were mostly focused at Microsoft headquarters in Seattle, Washington; other countries have not been exempted, with Kenya being the first in Africa.
Microsoft's African Development Center (ADC) was affected by the job cuts, as stated in a tweet by Edward Ochieng, CTO at Sklylab Systems.
Microsoft opened its ADC branch in Kenya and Nigeria in 2019, describing the move as a long-term investment and promising to spend $100 million in its first five years. Microsoft had hired over 500 developers as of June 2022, most of whom had been poached by local tech companies.
According to a tweet by Edward Ochieng, CTO at Sklylab Systems, Microsoft's ADC was among the company's branches affected by the job cuts. This development may impact Microsoft's ability to fulfill its investment commitment in Africa and may also have broader implications for the tech industry on the continent.
