LinkedIn collaborates with Microsoft and CLEAR to verify identity and employment.

15 Jun 2023

Announced in a blog post, LinkedIn, the social media platform designed for employment purposes and professional networking, has unveiled three fresh methods for authenticating users' identities and work credentials. These verification features were created in partnership with Microsoft's Entra Verified ID system and CLEAR, an operator of identity verification tools. Unlike some other social media networks that have begun charging for verification services, LinkedIn's new offerings are completely free. According to Oscar Rodriguez, the Vice President of Product Management, these options will help to instill trust in users' connections and ensure that the content they come across is genuine. While these verification options are not yet available to all LinkedIn members worldwide, the company intends to expand their availability over time.

The three new verification options have been introduced with the goal of promoting greater authenticity on the platform as well as improving users' chances of discovering valuable professional opportunities. One of the new features involves partnering with CLEAR to provide a badge on a user's LinkedIn profile that confirms they have been verified by the security company. To qualify for this verification, a valid phone number and a government-issued ID from the United States are required. Once approved, a new "Verifications" section will appear on the user's profile, indicating that they have a verified government ID. This option is currently only available to LinkedIn members in the US and will be rolled out later this month.

Another workplace verification option enables users to verify their workplace using their company email address. To use this feature, users must enter a 6-digit verification code sent to their company email address. Once the verification is complete, it will be displayed alongside other verifications in the new verification section on their profile. This feature is currently compatible with over 4,000 companies on LinkedIn, with eligibility expected to expand over time.

LinkedIn will also allow companies to use the Microsoft Entra Verified ID system to generate personalized digital employee IDs for free. Members can access their digital employee ID from their company and share it on LinkedIn. Once verified, the ID checkmark will appear in the new "Verification" section on the user's profile. This option will be available to participating companies at the end of this month.

These new verification features demonstrate LinkedIn's commitment to addressing the problem of fake accounts, which has plagued social media platforms. Despite the platform's efforts to detect and remove bogus accounts, there were still over 21 million fake accounts identified and deleted between January and June 2022. However, with these new verification options, users can be assured that they are connecting with verified and authentic individuals. With over 850 million users and 58 million companies listed on the platform, cyber threats are a significant concern on LinkedIn, making these verification measures an important step towards ensuring user safety and trust.
