NCC Orders Telecom Companies to Reactivate Barred SIM Cards

26 Aug 2024

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has mandated all telecommunications companies to reactivate customer lines that were recently deactivated. This decision comes with an extended deadline for the SIM-NIN linkage, offering subscribers more time to update their information.

In a press release shared on platform X, the NCC advised the public to ensure their NIN is linked to their SIM cards, emphasizing that reactivated lines would only remain active for a limited period. This move aims to mitigate the significant impact the recent deactivation had on businesses and individuals.

Initially, the deadline for linking NIN to SIM cards was set for April 15, 2024. It was subsequently extended to July 31, 2024. However, the abrupt barring of unlinked lines has led to widespread disruptions, prompting the NCC to reconsider and extend the deadline once more. The Commission stated, “Reactivated consumers are to note that this is for a limited period to allow them to properly link their NIN to their SIM.”

The Federal Government's objective with this exercise is to enhance the accuracy and security of the SIM ownership database, which is crucial for national security. Ensuring that all SIM cards are linked to NINs helps maintain a comprehensive and secure database, making it easier to track and manage telecommunications activities within the country. While the NCC has not specified how long this new grace period will last beyond the initial July 31, 2024, deadline, it underscores the importance of subscribers taking immediate action to comply with the SIM-NIN linkage requirement.

As the deadline extension provides temporary relief, the NCC's broader goal remains the same: to create a secure and efficient telecommunications environment that supports the country's economic and social development. Subscribers are encouraged to take advantage of the extended deadline to update their information and contribute to the success of this national initiative.
