Sistema.bio Secures $15M to Accelerate Global Biogas Expansion

26 Oct 2024

Sistema.bio, a leader in biogas technology, has raised $15 million in new funding aimed at expanding its clean energy solutions and promoting regenerative agriculture among smallholder farmers globally. The funding round was spearheaded by ElectriFI, a facility managed by EDFI Management Company, with contributions from existing investors such as Chroma Impact Investment, KawiSafi Ventures, and AXA IM Alts, among others.

With a presence across three continents, Sistema.bio has already had a positive impact on over 100,000 farms, contributing to a reduction of over 1 million tons of CO₂ equivalent emissions annually. This latest funding will support the company's mission to further expand its reach, enhance its technology, and continue empowering farmers with sustainable and regenerative energy solutions.

This funding comes at a time of significant growth for the company, which has seen a fivefold increase in sales over the past three years. Sistema.bio currently operates in 31 countries, with an expanding footprint in Africa, where its operations include Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Ethiopia. The company is now making inroads into new markets including Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Ghana, and Nigeria.

Sistema.bio’s core innovation is its biogas technology, which transforms animal waste into clean energy sources for cooking, heating, and electricity. This process also produces biofertilizer, which helps improve crop yields. To date, the company has installed over 12,000 biodigesters, providing clean and reliable energy access to more than 100,000 people across Sub-Saharan Africa. In collaboration with Engie Access, a leading off-grid energy services provider in Africa, the company has expanded its biogas solutions into Zambia and Mozambique.

Joyce Chacho, the Independent Board Chair of Sistema.bio, emphasized the strategic significance of the investment, citing the trust that investors have placed in the company's mission to scale its impact across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

“Our vision of empowering one million farmers by 2025 and reducing 1% of global emissions by 2030 is now more attainable than ever,” said Alexander Eaton, CEO and co-founder of Sistema.bio.

Building on its successful 2021 Series B funding, this new financial boost will enable further growth and help attract additional capital. Sistema.bio is leveraging advanced data tracking systems to maximize its environmental impact, driving high-quality carbon mitigation and climate change adaptation programs. These efforts are aligned with the company’s goals of decarbonizing agriculture and fostering regenerative farming practices.
