Beware of Email Scams Impersonating Nigerian Tech CEOs

17 Jun 2024

In recent times, there has been a surge in email scams targeting employees of Nigerian tech companies. These scams involve fraudsters impersonating Nigerian tech CEOs and sending urgent requests for assistance with overdue payments. The scammers typically create fake email accounts using the names of the CEOs and pressure the employees to transfer money to personal accounts.

How the Scam Works

The scammers typically send emails that appear to be from the CEO of the company. The emails often contain a sense of urgency and request the employee to transfer money quickly to cover an overdue payment. The scammers may even provide the employee with a bank account number and other details to facilitate the transfer.

Red Flags to Watch Out For

To avoid falling victim to these scams, it is important to be aware of the following red flags:

  • The email is from an unknown sender or an address that is not associated with the CEO.
  • The email is urgent and asks for immediate action.
  • They ask for money
  • The email requests that you transfer money to a personal account.
  • The email contains grammatical errors or typos.

How to Protect Yourself

If you receive an email that you think may be a scam, it is important to take the following steps:

  • Do not respond to the email or click on any links in the email.
  • Contact the CEO directly to verify the authenticity of the email.
  • Report the scam to the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) at report.antiphishing.org.

Additional Tips to Avoid Email Scams

  • Never share your personal or financial information with anyone over email.
  • Be wary of emails that request urgent action or ask for money.
  • Hover over links in emails to see the actual destination URL before clicking.
  • Install and use a reputable antivirus and anti-malware software.

By following these tips, you can help protect yourself from email scams and keep your personal and financial information safe.
