22 Aug 2024

Flutterwave, one of Africa’s leading payment technology companies, has announced a new partnership with American Express, allowing its online merchants in Nigeria to accept payments from American Express cardholders. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in Flutterwave's mission to connect African businesses with global consumers.

Through this partnership, Flutterwave’s merchants can now tap into a broader customer base, attracting American Express cardholders from around the world. This move aligns with Flutterwave's strategy to enhance the payment experience for both merchants and consumers, providing more flexibility and options in the digital economy.

"This collaboration also provides more options of where to shop and what to buy to American Express card holders across the globe. By offering American Express as a method of payment, Flutterwave will make the payment process faster and simpler for American Express card holders, and improve the experience for e-commerce businesses using Flutterwave, helping them to start locally and sell globally," said Olugbenga Agboola, CEO of Flutterwave.

The service, currently available in Nigeria, will soon be extended to other African markets, including Tanzania, Rwanda, Ghana, and Uganda. For American Express, the collaboration enhances its global network, increasing the number of locations where its cardholders can use their cards across Africa.

Briana Wilsey, Vice President and General Manager of Global Network Services EMEA at American Express, emphasized that the partnership is mutually beneficial, as it expands the reach of both Flutterwave merchants and American Express cardholders, fostering greater financial inclusion and digital payment adoption across the continent.

This partnership marks a significant step in American Express's efforts to establish a stronger foothold in Africa, leveraging Flutterwave’s extensive network to drive growth in one of the world's last strongholds of cash transactions.
