Google Rolls Out New Search Generative Experience (SGE) in Sub-Saharan Africa

18 Jun 2024

Google has rolled out its new Search Generative Experience (SGE) to users in the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) region as an opt-in experiment in Search Labs. The AI-powered experience is only available in English for now, but Google says it will be expanding to more languages and regions in the future.

SGE provides users with an AI-powered overview of key information to consider at the top of results to a search query, with links to dig deeper. This can be helpful for users who are overwhelmed by the amount of information online and need help finding answers quickly.

SGE also carries context over from question to question, which helps users more naturally continue their exploration. Users can ask follow-up questions or select suggested next steps to learn more about the topic they're exploring.

Google is also showing more links and links to a wider range of sources on the results page with SGE, creating new opportunities for content to be discovered.

Search ads will continue to appear in dedicated ad slots throughout the page, but Google will uphold its commitment to ad transparency and make sure ads are distinguishable from organic search results.

To start using SGE, users in Africa can tap the Labs icon in the Google app or Chrome desktop. Access through the Google app will be enabled over the coming week.

Google is encouraging users to opt in to try out SGE and share feedback directly with the teams working on it.
