Meta Brings AI Assistant to Seven African Countries, Boosting Creativity and Connectivity.

18 Jun 2024

Sub-Saharan Africa is leaping into the future of artificial intelligence (AI) with the launch of Meta's AI assistant across its popular platforms - Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. Announced on Thursday, this expansion brings enhanced connectivity, productivity, and creative tools to millions of users in seven countries: Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi.

The AI assistant, available in English, integrates seamlessly with these apps, allowing users to access real-time information directly without switching between applications. Imagine asking a question about a news article on Facebook or needing more details about a friend's travel post on Instagram - all without leaving the app.

Meta's AI also empowers users to be more expressive and creative.  The "Imagine" feature allows users to generate images based on text descriptions. Simply start typing, and the AI creates a corresponding image, refining it with each new character entered. This opens doors for creating unique content, from personalized GIFs to custom artwork.

"We're thrilled to share this next-generation assistant with more people," said Meta in a statement. "We can't wait to see how it empowers users and enhances their lives."

This launch highlights Meta's commitment to global AI accessibility. While the current update focuses on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and web integrations in Sub-Saharan Africa, Meta AI is also available on Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses in the US. The company promises even faster image generation, allowing users to create on-the-fly visuals for various purposes.
