NITDA Urges Social Media Collaboration on Content Moderation, Digital Safety.

28 May 2024

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is urging social media platforms like TikTok to implement stronger content moderation strategies to tackle online threats like hate speech, misinformation, and cyberbullying. NITDA Director-General Kashifu Inuwa emphasized this during a meeting with TikTok representatives. He stressed the need for collaboration between stakeholders to create a safe and thriving Nigerian digital space.

Inuwa highlighted the importance of adopting content moderation practices that align with global standards to protect users. NITDA, through its established Code of Practice and partnerships, aims to facilitate effective digital content moderation.

Implemented in 2022, NITDA's Code of Practice regulates major social media platforms operating in Nigeria, including Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, and others.

"The Code of Practice will significantly enhance digital safety and security in accordance with global standards," Inuwa stated. Recognizing the interconnectedness of the digital landscape, Inuwa underscored the importance of mutual cooperation between stakeholders to achieve shared goals, particularly in areas like service delivery and national progress.

Inuwa further explored the potential of social media platforms to propel Nigeria's Digital Literacy 4 All (DL4ALL) program forward. These platforms can be instrumental in capacity building, knowledge dissemination, training initiatives, and countering misinformation, ultimately leading to a safer online environment for Nigerians.

While safety remains a priority, Inuwa acknowledged the platforms' role in fostering creative expression and entertainment through features like filters and editing tools. Social media also offers comedy content and informational videos, serving as a launchpad for influencers and viral trends. By working together, NITDA and social media platforms can create a Nigerian digital space that is both safe and empowering for its users.
