Omniverse Summit Explores Africa's Role in Shaping the Future Digital Economy.

28 Apr 2024

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) unveiled its Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP) 2.0 at the Omniverse Summit in Lagos, emphasizing collaboration for a thriving digital future in Nigeria.

NITDA Director-General Kashifu Inuwa highlighted the need for shared goals, resources, and knowledge. "Our vision is to empower Nigeria digitally through innovation and inclusive economic growth fueled by technology," he stated.

SRAP 2.0 outlines eight strategic pillars to accelerate digital transformation across all sectors:

  • Fostering digital literacy and cultivating talent, aiming for 70% national digital literacy by 2027 through various initiatives.

  • Building a robust technology research system to position Nigeria within the top 25% globally in key areas like AI, IoT, and Robotics.

  • Strengthening policy implementation and legal frameworks through stakeholder collaboration to achieve national digital goals.

  • Promoting inclusive access to digital infrastructure and services by connecting the unconnected through investments in learning centers and innovation hubs.

  • Strengthening cybersecurity and enhancing digital trust to build user confidence in digital platforms.

  • Nurturing an innovative and entrepreneurial ecosystem to promote synergy within the industry and facilitate digital transformation.

  • Forging strategic partnerships with external stakeholders, like NITDA's partnership with the Omniverse platform.

  • Cultivating a vibrant organizational culture and agile workforce within NITDA for internal agency development.

Inuwa emphasized collaboration, stating, "We believe that by working together, we can transform Nigeria into a global digital powerhouse." He encouraged stakeholders to download the roadmap and provide feedback.

The summit also addressed global collaboration and challenges. U.S. Consul General Mr. Will Stevens commended Nigeria's dynamic digital ecosystem and emphasized the need for a shift from "what can be done for Africa" to "what can be achieved together." He highlighted the importance of African voices in global discussions and called for permanent African representation on the UN Security Council.

Stevens acknowledged challenges like intellectual property protection and exchange rate risks while noting the substantial partnership between the U.S. and African tech startups. He concluded by emphasizing the need for collaboration beyond borders to address global challenges.

The Omniverse Summit aims to drive the digital economy in Africa, exploring narratives about Africa and Africans and their role in shaping the future.
