South Africa Opens Doors to Remote Workers with New Digital Nomad Visa.

29 Apr 2024

South Africa has officially launched its digital nomad visa program, allowing skilled foreign workers the opportunity to live and work in the country. This new policy caters to remote workers and freelancers, with a particular focus on attracting talent to the tech industry.

"The introduction of this visa recognizes the changing landscape of work," said South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. "An increasing number of skilled professionals, especially in tech, are seeking the flexibility and lifestyle benefits of remote work."

To qualify for the visa, foreign workers must earn an annual income exceeding R1 million (approximately $53,665). The visa allows them to work for a company based outside of South Africa.

The South African government sought public feedback on the draft visa regulations before finalizing the program. While some residents expressed concerns about potential impacts on living costs and inequality, the visa was ultimately approved.

This move aligns with a global trend. Several countries, including Canada, Czech Republic, Japan, Spain, and South Korea, have established similar programs to attract remote workers. South Africa joins other African nations like Seychelles, Cape Verde, Namibia, and Mauritius in offering remote work visas.
