Wema Bank Partners with FG to Empower 500,000 Women through MOWA x SARA Accelerator Programme

28 Oct 2024

Wema Bank, in collaboration with the Federal Government's Ministry of Women Affairs, has launched the MOWA x SARA Accelerator Programme—an ambitious initiative designed to empower 500,000 women across Nigeria with essential vocational and business management skills.

The programme is part of Wema Bank's women-focused initiative, SARA by Wema, which aims to promote gender inclusion and equality. Through SARA, Wema Bank has been providing women with tailored resources, financial access, networking opportunities, healthcare, and partnerships with notable brands to foster their personal and professional growth.

The newly unveiled MOWA x SARA Accelerator Programme builds on these efforts by offering women across Nigeria structured training that focuses on vocational skills and business management. The initiative will span 24 months, covering all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The programme will feature a five-day in-person training schedule, with two days focused on soft skills and business management, followed by two days dedicated to vocational skills in areas such as food processing, fashion designing, and hairdressing, and concluding with a final day for assessment and evaluation to measure progress.

Wema Bank’s Executive Director of Retail and Digital, Tunde Mabawonku, expressed confidence in the programme’s potential to transform the lives of Nigerian women, emphasizing the bank’s dedication to empowering women in alignment with their mission of "empowering lives through innovation". This capacity-building programme will equip Nigerian women with skills to generate income, become economically active, and contribute to national development. The initial pilot phase will launch in Anambra and expand to Ekiti and Kano, with eight cohorts participating throughout the country.
