Yet to be Unveiled Electric Car by Innoson has Sold Out

27 Sep 2024

Nigerian automaker Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company (IVM) has completed the production of its first electric vehicles (EVs), marking a significant milestone for the country's automotive industry.

Although the cars have not been officially unveiled yet, Cornel Osigwe, the company's Head of Communications and Corporate Affairs, shared a sneak peek through a video of him test-driving one of the new EVs. The video, intentionally unpolished, has generated considerable buzz, with the first batch of vehicles already sold out through pre-orders.

“The initial batch of IVM electric cars has been completely sold out,” he posted. “For the benefit of the doubt, the new Innoson Electric Vehicles as well the one I test drove hasn't been certified and approved by the Innoson Vehicle quality control department for sales. It is still undergoing the final round of checks. More so it hasn't been officially announced or launched by the company, but I needed to create a buzz before the official announcement and then I did my magic.”

In his announcement, Osigwe explained that the vehicles are still undergoing final quality checks before their formal release. Despite this, the pre-orders have been fully booked, reflecting strong interest from Nigerian consumers eager to get behind the wheel of an electric vehicle made locally. The video has already gone viral, attracting attention nationwide, thanks to Osigwe's strategy of leveraging media trends to boost visibility for the new cars.

“Since yesterday and today, we have received hundreds of calls and upfront payments from interested clients who want to be the first set to drive the Innoson Electric Vehicle. My inbox was filled with inquiries on the prices. The first set which are few in numbers are now currently sold out,” he said.

The electric vehicles, produced at Innoson’s Nnewi plant, position the company as a key player in Nigeria's growing electric car market, which is attracting increasing interest amidst rising fuel prices. Full details on the vehicle specifications and pricing are expected during the official launch, which is yet to be announced.
