Call for Applications: Cultural Survival Launches Indigenous Youth Fellowship Project.

Cultural Survival, an organization dedicated to defending Indigenous Peoples' rights and promoting their self-determination, cultures, and political resilience, is seeking applications for its Indigenous Youth Fellowship Project. This program aims to support young Indigenous leaders between the ages of 17 and 28 in developing and implementing creative and impactful projects that address the challenges posed by natural resource exploitation and climate change.

Program Overview

The Indigenous Youth Fellowship Project provides funding of up to $6,000 to support community-based projects that focus on:

  • Transition minerals (nickel, lithium, cobalt, and copper) and their impact on Indigenous communities
  • Climate change-related disaster prevention and response
  • Climate change solutions
  • Land and livelihoods approaches

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Indigenous Youth Fellowship Project, applicants must:

  • Be Indigenous youth between the ages of 17 and 28
  • Identify as either an individual or a collective group of Indigenous youth
  • Reside in one of the following countries: United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Panama, South America, Nepal, India, Bangladesh, DRC, Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, Mali, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Taiwan, Indonesia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Sweden, Finland, Greenland, or Norway
  • Have access to the internet and the ability to collaborate with other fellows, the Cultural Survival team, and participate in video conferences
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to gender equality and inclusivity, welcoming applicants from all genders, including cis women, trans women, trans men, Two-Spirits, non-binary people, and other marginalized genders

Project Types

The Indigenous Youth Fellowship Project supports a wide range of creative and innovative projects, including:

  • Advocacy campaigns, lobbying efforts, and proactive strategies
  • Writing projects, such as journalism, storytelling, investigative reporting, community research, and articles
  • Capacity-building initiatives, such as training workshops, meetings, and exchanges
  • Arts and multimedia productions, such as audiovisuals, photography, cinema, documentaries, radio, podcasts, graphic illustrations, murals, and paintings
  • Technological innovations that aim to protect the environment, strengthen communities, and preserve Indigenous traditions without causing harm

Application Process

The application process for the Indigenous Youth Fellowship Project consists of three stages:

  1. Stage 1: General Information Form Interested applicants must complete a general information form providing details about their proposed project.

  2. Stage 2: Full Proposal Narrative Cultural Survival will conduct an initial review of submitted forms and invite selected applicants to proceed to Stage 2. In this stage, applicants will be required to submit a comprehensive proposal narrative outlining their project's objectives, methodology, timeline, budget, and evaluation plan.

  3. Stage 3: Finalist Interviews Finalists will be invited to participate in interviews with the Cultural Survival team.

Selection Timeline

  • Unselected applicants from Stage 1 will be notified within three months.
  • Unselected applicants from Stage 2 will be notified within three months.
  • The fellowship award process will take up to six months.

Deadline

The deadline for submitting Stage 1 general information forms is November 30, 2023.
