Microsoft and OpenAI Establish $2 Million Fund to Counter AI Misuse.

29 May 2024

In a bid to counter the misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the spread of misinformation, Microsoft and OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, have established a $2 million Societal Resilience Fund (SRF). This fund aims to bolster AI education worldwide, particularly in light of the numerous elections taking place this year.

The companies emphasized the importance of equipping people with the necessary tools and information to navigate the increasingly intricate digital landscape and access reliable resources, especially when an estimated two billion people worldwide will participate in democratic elections this year.

Through the SRF, Microsoft and OpenAI aim to foster resilience across society against deceptive AI content. This initiative aligns with the public commitments both companies have made through the White House Voluntary Commitments and the Tech Accord to Combat Deceptive Use of AI in the 2024 Elections.

The shared objective of the companies is to mitigate the escalating threat of malicious entities utilizing AI and deepfakes to mislead voters and destabilize democracy. The recent surge in AI-generated misinformation content, fueled by advancements in AI technology, has raised concerns.

The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2024 identified AI-generated misinformation/disinformation as one of the top global risks this year. The report, which includes findings from the Global Risks Perception Survey, highlighted how advancements in AI technology have simplified the creation and dissemination of misinformation. According to the report, 53 percent of respondents identified AI misinformation as the most significant global risk in 2024.
