Microsoft, in partnership with the Open Data Policy Lab, Harvard Institutional Data Initiative, UNESCO, and DirectRelief, has launched the New Commons Challenge 2025—an global call for organizations to develop and manage data commons that advance responsible AI development.
This initiative aims to address a critical barrier in AI progress: the scarcity of diverse, high-quality datasets. By fostering collaborative data ecosystems, the challenge seeks innovative solutions that support both humanitarian efforts and localized decision-making in vital sectors.
The challenge emphasizes two primary themes:
Disaster Response Enhancement: Building data commons to provide humanitarian agencies with accurate, timely data that improves emergency preparedness, response, and recovery.
Localized Decision-Making Support: Developing data ecosystems that enable communities and local actors to make informed decisions in areas like public health, urban development, and environmental conservation.
